Obituary: SAMUEL 'PETE' NORMAN MCKENZIE

 

Samuel "Pete" Norman McKenzie died at his home on the inland waterway in Hampstead, N.C., surrounded by his family and friends.

Pete was born June 30, 1935, in Wilmington, N.C., the son of the late Norman A. and Lillie Melton McKenzie.

Pete was an active member of St. Andrews on the Sound Episcopal Church and a former member of the vestry and had a wonderful and deep faith in God. He was owner and president of McKenzie Supply Co. with offices in Wilmington, Lumberton and Laurinburg, a company founded by his father in the 1950's. He was a board member of the YMCA, Seaman's Center, Southern Wholesalers Association and in his day was an avid fisherman with his hobby being big game fishing and tournaments.

He is survived by his wife, Betty S. McKenzie of the home; his children, Sandra M. Williams and husband Bart, and Sam N. McKenzie Jr.; grandchildren, Sarah Mac Williams, Betsy Williams, and Barton Williams, Shawn Cox, Seth Cox, Grace Gallagher and Thomas Gallagher; stepchildren, Tim Cox and wife Thelma, Tony Gallagher and wife Tara, and Kenny Gallagher and wife Lisa; cousins, Kathy McKenzie D'Arey, John R. Melton Jr., Naomi Causey, Virgie M. Lyter and Marie M. Smith; a caregiver and friend, Buddy Dowtin.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at St. Andrews On the Sound Episcopal Church by The Rev. Richard Elliott and The Rev. John C. Drewry.

The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the home, 2166 Washington Acres Rd., Hampstead.
