Obituary: Jackie Brewer

Jack L. Brewer, 71, of Newport, NC, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
His graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Gethsemane Memorial Park with the Rev. Ben Sims officiating.
Mr. Brewer was born May 6, 1936, in Greenville to the late Jesse Brewer and the late Ellen Corbett Brewer. He was a letterman in baseball, football and basketball at New Hanover High School in Wilmington. He was the starting shooting guard for the New Hanover basketball team that reached the state title game in 1953 and 1954.

Following graduation, Mr. Brewer served in the U.S. Air Force until May 1958, spending a great deal of his service in the Far East. Upon separation, he began work on his bachelor?s degree, finishing in May 1962 at East Carolina University. He was married Christmas Day, 1959, to his wife, Faye Smith of Kinston. He worked for more than 40 years in the bottling industry, spending more than a decade with the Dr. Pepper parent company and nearly 30 years with True Manufacturing. He was an accomplished world traveler, going on dozens of trips to Europe, Hawaii and elsewhere during his long life. He will be deeply missed by his family and all those lucky enough to have had him in their life.


In addition to his wife of 47 years, he is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Pollard and husband Ted of Creedmoor, Kimi Kelley and husband Danny of Morehead City and Tracey Lewis and husband Greg of Newport; one brother, Hillman Brewer of Wilmington; and six grandchildren, Eric Werner, Jackie Werner, Katie Pollard, Sean Kelley, Kristina Kelley and Jessica Lewis.


The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.
