Obituary: DOUGLAS BERNARD UPCHURCH, JR.

 

Douglas Bernard Upchurch, Jr., 75, of Hampstead, died December 30, 2010. Douglas personally wrote the following in 2008:

“Doug was born June 19, 1935 in Wilmington, NC, son of the late Helen Ghenworth and Douglas B. Upchurch. He graduated from New Hanover High School, barely, and the University of N.C. Chapel Hill. He served in the US Army with the 82nd Airborne Division.

Upon graduation from UNC in 1961 he began a career with Crawford & Co. claims adjustors where he worked for 35 years. He managed company operations in Wyoming, Montgomery, AL, and Norfolk, VA prior to retiring in 1996.

Doug belonged to various organizations throughout his lifetime. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Fayetteville, NC. He was a member of Claims Association in Fayetteville, St Louis, Atlanta, Wyoming, Montgomery, and Norfolk, VA. He was Secretary of the Sheridan County Sportsmen's Association, President of the Sheridan Lions Club, and Wyoming State Treasurer of Ducks Unlimited for a number of years. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol where he was a patrolman with the Antelope Butte Ski area.

Surviving is his daughter, Lynn Mecham, Ft. Collins CO; son, CAPT Bernie Upchurch, USN, Falls Church, VA, and brother, Charles Upchurch, Wilmington, NC; and various ex-spouses."

A memorial service will be 2pm Saturday, January 8, 2011, at Andrews Hampstead Chapel with Chaplain Anne Gordon officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday at the funeral home from 1pm until the service hour.
